Mikala Turner: Making Moments Last a Lifetime

Who knew another boring summer with her sister, cousin and an iPhone 4 would spark a passion and set the course for her future career. Mikala Turner, a sophomore, who is majoring in multimedia communication with a TV/ Video concentration is from Champaign, Illinois.  She found her passion for video editing when she was in middle school.

“My sister and cousin only wanted to make a few videos, but I loved making something that would last,” reflected Turner.

Turner’s favorite part about making videos is editing. She especially loves editing montages of her family vacations and candid moments of friends. She loves editing because it makes videos that much better, which is why she would like to be an editor for a movie or tv show, specifically working on dramas.

Where The Inspiration Comes From

Traveling is what inspires most of Turner’s videos. Her favorite place she’s been to is Upstate New York. Her older sister lives there, and Turner loves the vibe of the people.  If she could go anywhere in the world, she would go to South America because she has grown a great appreciation for the culture since taking three years of Spanish.

Turner started making videos of her travels in 2016 but didn’t incorporate music until 2017, now that’s her favorite thing to do. She loves syncing the beats and changes in rhythm with her different shots.

Her work with Media Services at Olivet has opened a new door for her career. In her position, she works camera for chapel and events. Turner never saw herself as a videographer until put on camera for chapel. Now she would consider adding that as a possibility. According to Turner’s roommate, Sydney Hatch, Turner is most talented at her job, and she really enjoys it.

Hobbies

Not only is Turner passionate about video editing she also loves to read and bake. Her favorite author is Rainbow Rowell. Turner particularly likes Rowell’s book, Eleanor and Park. She is a sucker for fiction and romance books. Turner grew her passion for baking this past summer when she worked at Pandemonium Donuts. She moved up the line quickly and thoroughly enjoyed the job.

Turner is positive, driven and creative. She loves shopping with friends, going for long drives, attends a few campus ministries and campus events. She is very organized and manages her time well to succeed even with a busy schedule. Not only does she work for media services, but she just started as webmaster for Spark.HD. She is very excited to grow her skill set in this role.

Walk With The Lord

Turner highly values her faith and family. Her roommate, Hatch, said her favorite thing about Turner is her “wonderful soul.” She is kind to everyone she meets and very caring. According to Hatch, she is committed to the Lord, and Turner has helped her grow in Him.

A verse Turner holds close to heart is

Jesus replied, “You do not realize now what I am doing, but later you will understand.”  John 13:7

She found it on the day of orientation for Olivet. This verse has stuck with her because she was unsure if Olivet was the right choice at that time. Throughout her two years here, she has become confident that it was the right choice. She feels comfortable and encouraged in the communications department and has made lots of close friends.
