If there’s a late-night intramural game, chances are you’ll see sophomore John David Elleson there. Elleson has participated in several sports but decided to take on a referee position this past year.

“I greatly enjoy the competitive nature and thrill of sports. Which makes intramurals an intriguing option to be involved in since I have such a passion and liking for sports,” said Elleson when asked why he participates in intramurals.

Intramurals are heavily encouraged as soon as you step foot on campus at Olivet Nazarene University. From Ollies Follies, during the first week of school to the wacky games, you instantly get a taste of the competitive nature offered.

“I encourage students to participate in intramural sports because it gets students connected and helps people to stay active. Being someone who loved to participate in athletics, I want everyone to be able to have the best experience possible. Offering a multitude of intramural options helps encourage all sorts of people to participate as well.”

Reid Martzke, Director of intramurals

ONU Intramurals offers a variety of sports in hopes of having something available for everyone. Elleson has participated in every season offered and almost every sport offered. Although it was hard for him to pick a favorite sport, he eventually settled on Basketball due to the progress he’s made playing.

During freshman year of high school, Elleson was involved in a chainsaw incident and was unable to use both his hands for months and had to attend physical therapy for years. Being involved in basketball reminds him how far he’s come along since his incident and it’s more than just a game for him.

Elleson has made many memories throughout the seasons and through overcoming but one memory, in particular, he’ll never forget.

“We were playing 5 vs. 7 in flag football, so the odds were against us, against a team that we had a heavy rivalry against. With five minutes left we obtained the ball and we were down by three touchdowns. We worked as a team and we were able to make a big comeback to win the game on the last play with a second to spare,” Elleson said. He trusted his teammates and had a specific way of encouraging them.

He said that he tries to encourage his fellow teammates while challenging them to be the best athlete they can be. He looks to his athletic friends to bring to his teams. When picking teammates he looks towards his friends that are as competitive as him and want to win. As much as he has a competitive spirit, Elleson enjoys bringing on his friends to have fun and create lasting memories.

Elleson is grateful to intramurals for the memories he has made and the people he has met. Joining the referee team he has made several connections. He explained that he was already spending most nights participating in intramurals or cheering on his teammates; so he thought he’d join the staff and start getting paid for it. He explained that the staff is all very helpful and supportive of one another.

The work environment feeds off the competitor’s energy and Elleson explained that there is never a dull night. Intramurals is all about having fun, staying active and creating lasting memories.

Elleson said, “I think people should participate in intramurals because it is a great way to spend time with people around sports. There’s nothing like a good old competition!”

Taking away the inner campus dodgeball win, Caleb Jones stands beside his fellow resident assistants. The inner campus dodgeball tournament is the first intramural event held and encourages freshman to participate against other freshman. “I think that intramurals are a great way to deepen friendships and also get to know people who are interested in the same sport.” Says Jones.
