Who is Collin McCarthy?

Collin McCarthy was sitting on the couch watching television in his family living room when his parents sat down and joined him. The three of them each knew that the college McCarthy would attend in the fall was between Olivet Nazarene University and Governor’s State University. A big factor is that they would both be close to home and McCarthy’s family making it not only less expensive but also would allow him to still be around his loved ones. However, after visiting both college campuses and taking a deeper look into each of their TV video programs McCarthy knew that Olivet would take him in the direction that he hoped to follow after graduating.

“It was really the only choice cause nothing really comes close to the quality at Olivet,” he said.

“Thanks for Listening…this is Spark HD!”

Now a Junior at Olivet, McCarthy is wrapping up his second year as a multimedia communication major. One moment that stood out to him throughout his time at Olivet Nazarene University was his first semester of sophomore year when he took a radio broadcasting class.

“Being on a radio station and have our own show for pretty much the entire semester was actually super, super cool,” McCarthy said. “I had friends that would tune in and then message me about it and make jokes about stuff I said. It was nice to have a thing that was mine.”

Part-time Student and Worker All in One

Along with focusing on his schoolwork, McCarthy also spends his time working part-time at Staples. Balancing both has been a struggle at times but McCarthy has learned a system that allows him to balance his school, work, and social life. After classes, McCarthy goes straight to work then after he’s off the clock focuses on his schoolwork that’s due so he doesn’t fall behind and is overwhelmed later. This system has been effective in positive ways as McCarthy is learning to manage more responsibilities as an adult.

“Even though he’s in college part-time, Colin continues to never fail at being a good worker,” Keith Reginer, the sales manager at Staples explained.

“He’s always there when we need him and shows up to work with no complaints. He’s also very responsible when we give him hard tasks at work that we wouldn’t normally give to an employee.”
