“When I was in 8th Grade, I watched all of the behind-the-scenes documentaries for The Lord of the Rings trilogy. I thought ‘I want to be a part of something like that,’” said Truitt Murrow, a 2015 Olivet Nazarene University graduate with a degree in Multimedia Studies with a concentration in TV/Video and Film.
Murrow recently worked as an assistant editor for The Holly, a documentary about Terrance Roberts who has turned from leading a gang to becoming an activist in Denver, Colorado.

Olivet Memories

Before coming to Olivet, Murrow was investigated different Nazarene colleges. When meeting with the art department, Murrow learned of the media department and decided then that Olivet would be the best fit for him.
“I always remember Truitt being creative, he was a hard-working guy,” said Professor Mark Bishop, a professor in the Communication Department at Olivet. Professor Bishop was also Murrow’s favorite professor while he was attending.

Some of Murrow’s favorite memories of Olivet include being a part of the community and hanging out with friends.
“Living in a close-knit community, where you can text your friend to come over and watch a movie, and they are able to arrive in 5 minutes, is something that just isn’t feasible in the real world,” said Murrow.
Where He’s At Now

Currently, Murrow is working as a freelance assistant editor. Typically, assistant editors will be employed by a single production company, with Murrow, he is able to work with multiple companies, similar to recent Olivet graduate, Wyatt Gantz. It also allows him to be able to work with a church that needed to start live streaming due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since then, he has helped grow the digital ministry of the church significantly.
A few other projects that Murrow has worked on include Diners Drive-Ins and Dives on the Food Network, Building Roots on HGTV, and an upcoming docuseries for HBO.

In the future, Murrow wants to be able to move from Colorado to Los Angeles. Right now, he works on videos that have less of a script and are more of a documentation of reality, but he wants to be able to work more on scripted content.
Advice for Current Students
“Olivet is a great place to learn. But technology is rapidly advancing, and a lot of what you are learning now will be outdated in a couple years.

It’s important to learn how to learn all the new tools, and that will make you a valuable asset to anyone who wants to employ you.”
The main piece of advice Murrow has for students that are currently in the Communication Department is to always continue to learn. As technology continues to advance rapidly, a lot of information learned in college will become outdated in just a few years. People that are able to continuously learn as they get further in their career are a more valuable asset to any company.
In a research article from the European Journal of Education, it says that by continuously learning, it is possible to increase employability, especially in the later stages of a career.
Something that video editors, like Murrow, will have to learn in the future is how Artificial Intelligence will be able to be used within video editing software. Which is what Adobe is currently planning on doing, according to a Reuters article.
During Murrow’s time at Olivet, he managed to learn not only the basic skills needed to do his job, but also how to teach himself things that were needed to be learned from outside of the curriculum.
