Wesley Currell Peer Profile

Wesley Currell, a sophomore here at Olivet Nazarene University, is a funny, smart, intelligent and sweet person to be around. He is also a student worker for the media team.

“Olivet took my faith from being pretty stagnant and has encouraged me to actually pursue it a little bit more,” Currell said.

“Wesley is a hardworking individual. He is very personable and willing to start up a conversation with you. He’s not afraid of interacting with people. He is proactive in learning new things, and he is not daunted by things that he doesn’t know about,” Sydnie Wilson said, who works with him.

How did Wesley hear about Olivet?

Curell heard about Olivet Nazarene University through his church’s community. His entire pastoral staff attended and graduated from Olivet. His youth pastor was also from Olivet, so constantly hearing about the college made him curious about all the fuss. His pastor’s children, whom he knew as a child, also attended Olivet and graduated by the time he came in.

Why did Wesley come to Olivet?

Curell originally planned to attend Olivet because he loved computer science growing up. Olivet had one of the country’s only computer science programs for a Christian college. Olivet grabbed his attention because of the program but he left because it did not have the specific application he had sought. He was told about the communication department, and a light clicked in his mind. He felt like it was something the Lord was calling him to. He is glad he stayed at Olivet after switching majors.

The reason why Wesley left the computer engineering program.

Growing up, Curell was a huge introvert, and he thought computer science was an extremely good field since he liked programming and that time of aspect with computer hardware. He came to Olivet and did not have the hardware side of computer science, which is a “crying shame,” Curell said, so it disappointed him. He became more extroverted because of his roommates. Wesley liked the experience of entertaining and persuading more, and he explained that it was difficult to do that without some sort of communication background.

Wesley’s best memories so far at Olivet

Curell loved the experience when he was a freshman to see the progress between moving into Nesbit and not particularly knowing anyone, then being able to find people through his resident assistant and his professors and make meaningful connections with amazing people who had a lot of say over how his workload and social life went. They encouraged him to experience Olivet and not just sit in his dorm room alone. They helped make him more social and spend time with people. His best memory is having these people who didn’t need to help him but encouraged him and made sure he was engulfing himself in Olivet.

How Olivet changed Wesley for the better

Curell grew up in a Christian household for his entire life, and he was never challenged about why he believed in Jesus Christ. When he came to Olivet, he wasn’t asking why he believed but how to show that to others. Through his experience at work and being on ministry teams, he’s been able to show his faith and God’s love rather than sitting and wondering if or why he could.
