As the semester comes to an end, I am beginning to look back on all that I’ve learned throughout the duration of my PR writing class. Although I don’t necessarily want to go into a writing career, I do know that these skills are extremely helpful to know and apply in any PR job.
Over the duration of these 16 weeks, I have grown as a writer, learning how to write in AP style, learning how to write facts using the top-down approach and also learning how to write in specific formats. Being a PR major having these skills has given me a groundwork for my future work.
With that, I plan to use these skills as I work this summer as a social media/PR intern planning trips, as well as revamping digital aspects of the company as well. Although this doesn’t necessarily mean writing press releases, backgrounders or fact sheets, these skills will help me if that opportunity were to ever arise.
Having the opportunity to follow a major company and observe their social media from week to week can be beneficial for my future work. It is helpful to look at how captions should be curated, as well how companies should handle conflict if it were to arise. Having good writing and creative skills can help in any job I end up with.
Social media and networking sites like LinkedIn can be beneficial for students like myself, as well as young professionals in the PR field to connect with others in the industry and learn from them. It’s helpful to build yourself up as a professional and LinkedIn is a great way to showcase yourself in a professional setting.
