As the son of an artist, Graham Hughes has always desired a way to express his creative mind. Through animation and story-boarding in his current major as well as a side hobby in prop-making, Hughes has found his outlet for creativity.
His initial interests in Architectural Engineering presented itself with a few roadblocks that motivated Hughes to change his major to Multimedia Communications with a concentration in film studies. The background and software training of engineering gave him just the skills he needed to gain a fuller background on prop making. He especially utilizes his skills in 3D printing in his current affairs.
I listened to where my real interests lie and pursued what made my eyes light up and my heart beat a little faster.
-Junior Graham Hughes
Hughes gained an interest in prop making thanks to his desire for hands-on learning and his love for film. Hughes started creating things by doing home finishings with some of his first creations being bed frames and privacy walls. These tactile skills combined with his love for film naturally lead him to the recreation of classic props from his favorite films.
Some of my favorite makes include the idol from Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, the Orb and Walkman from Guardians of the Galaxy, various lightsabers from Star Wars, and the Cryocan from Jurassic Park.

Prop making is not the only way Hughes is keeping his creative mind busy. He has also been heavily involved in music for nearly twelve years now. He is a current member of ONU’s very own marching band, orchestra, and wind ensemble. Through hard work and self exploration, Hughes has gained proficiency in a multitude of different instruments including bass, guitar, banjo, djembe, trumpet, French horn, mellophone, upright bass, and more.
As a part of the ONU Marching Band, Hughes got to be a part of their recent trip to Rome. The band was invited to perform as a part of the New Year’s Day Parade in Rome, Italy.

Hughes’ fiance, Megan Mishler, said that his creative side also proves true in his personal life. She loves the way he views the world through an artistic lens as well as his intense passion for the things he loves.
I have never met another person who has had more random Star Wars knowledge just because they love the franchise…

Mishler also added that Hughes is a very hard worker who constantly strives for perfection. She is very proud to see how his work turns out because she knows he put his whole heart into it which often leads him into success.
Hughes’ hard work is shown in his academics as he is consistently reappearing on the Academic Dean’s List. With a passion for his future, work is almost as good as play. Both he and Mishler are excited to see how the future plays out for Hughes with all of his creative work.
