A man with strong ethics and a strong faith, Peter Babb writes to share worldly information, but lives to share the good news.
Peter was born in Pontiac, Illinois and grew up as one of four children. After he saw the environment, in which he describes, “We respect and love one another as Christ would, and at the same time we grow in our faith,” Peter transfer to Olivet from Heartland Community College. While attending Olivet, Peter is studying multimedia communications with a concentration in journalism.
A Man With Faith
Peter describes his faith as being the most important aspect in his life. In every scenario, whether at school or hanging out with friends, he tries to be a representative for Christ. In a world full of division, Peter desires to be a resemble Christ with the hope of sharing love and creating unity. Peter describes himself as being blessed with family, friends, and mentors that have been influential in his faith journey.
“They have shown me that Christians aren’t the us vs them mentality. We show people love, we show people kindness, and we can still have fun,” he said. He added that one reason he enjoys Olivet is that even though are many different people from different backgrounds, but the students love and respect one another and grow in their faith.
A Man of Ethics
On top of his faith, Peter was taught about the value of a strong work ethic.
“My parents raised me to work hard for what you want to earn, and not have someone give it to you.”
Peter prides himself on having the mentality to get work done correctly, effectively, and efficiently. He ultimately believes that it is the hard-working mindset that has brought him to where he is today. Ultimately, Peter knows that to achieve goals, such as graduating college, one must be able to put in the effort, even when times get tough. Peter’s work-ethic is also noticeable to others.
“I admire his efforts towards his future career. He is head strong, confident, and does anything he sets his mind to,” his roommate, Levi Hunt, said.
A Man With Passion
One of Peter’s biggest passions is writing, which led him to majoring in Journalism; however, this has not always been the case.
“I did I not always love to write. In fifth grade, I was horrible at writing and hated it,” Peter said. For Peter, his love for writing came after he took a broadcasting class in high school. In the class he was challenged to break down big pieces of information and make it digestible for the audience, and the more and more that he did it, the more he fell in love with writing. Even though the writing aspect did not appeal to him in the beginning, Peter describes himself as always being intrigued with the field of Journalism.
“I grew up with Steward Scott, George Stephanopoulos, Robin Roberts, and Erne Johnson. Those people inspired me because they take things that are extremely complex and they break it down to us.” His passion for Journalism eventually led him to become part of the Olivet Gazette, where he writes on global subjects for a local audience.
Another one of Peter’s passions is sports. Peter has the ability to both talk about and play any type of sport, from basketball, to football, to even golf. Growing up in a family of six, Peter says that he learned to be competitive from a young age, both on and off the court.
Peter also has a passion for people. Currently he is involved with the O.A.R, which is an organization which helps both freshmen and transfers grow comfortable with Olivet’s campus. Specifically, Peter works with incoming transfers to Olivet and tries to engage them in anywhere from academic to campus life.
“I do want people to feel comfortable and to feel like this is home, because I was the same way. But helping them be engaged and make Olivet their home is something I’m very proud of,” he said.
A Man With a Future
Looking ahead, Peter hopes to one day combine his passions and become a Sports Information Director at for a news organization, but most importantly wants to start a family and find a community to call home. Though he is unsure of the specifics, Peter says, “Whatever it is, God has a path for me.”
