The Hopes and Dreams of Jonah Hale

The sound of applause radiates from the television, as Jonah Hale watches the Academy Awards.  He sits in his lazy boy chair with his delicious and reasonably-priced soft drink knowing that one day it will be him that walks across that stage to receive his Oscar.

Filmmaking has always been a love for the 22-year-old pastor’s son.

“Film directing has been my dream job for a long time,” Jonah said “but I have always had second thoughts about it. I decided to just go for it, and I’ve been very happy with that decision.”

As a student of Olivet Nazarene University, Jonah as been able to explore the various aspects of his love in classes like documentary production. His favorite class being basic video production, which allowed students the opportunity to have hands-on experience with producing short films.

Hale has other passions besides filmmaking. He is also an avid gamer. Some of his best memories at Olivet involve gaming with his friends. His favorite occurred during his freshmen year at Olivet, when the very popular video game, Fortnite, released. Upon the game’s release Hale and his friends got four separate TVs and put them in his room. He would then have his entire floor in his room as they played the game all night long.

Another passion of Jonah lies in longboarding. Longboarding is a beloved method of transportation for Jonah, and a great way for him to relax for the stress of being a college student.

“I really like taking my longboard to Perry Farm because of the smooth, hilly pathways. I usually have a speaker with me so I will just jam out while rolling down the road,” he said.

In order to pay for his schooling, video games, and his filmmaking dreams, Jonah spends his evenings as a waiter at a Bourbonnais restaurant known as Brickstone. He has spent over a year there and is happy with his job. Since the restaurant is a bit pricey, the customers are often willing to spend more money, which puts a few extra dollars in Jonah’s pockets by the end of his shifts.

Even though he loves his work and hobbies, Jonah’s passion will always be filmmaking. Jonah plans on finding an internship that will help him in his filmmaking goals. Upon graduation he is looking to use connections he made from an internship to be able to get a foothold in the industry. He wants to work his way up the Hollywood ladder, and gain as much knowledge and experience as possible.

For now Jonah is content with sitting at his laptop and writing scripts that he hopes one day will become amazing films. With every word he types however, the thought of the beautiful golden Oscar shines in his mind.
