Brady Jones sits at a table in Cru5h.
He smooths his luscious locks of hair underneath a backwards baseball cap, then adjusts his glasses to better see the laptop screen in front of him.
As he reads the lines he just wrote, he takes a bite of his hamburger followed by a sip of Mountain Dew.
He sits in thought for a moment. Then, receiving a spark of inspiration, he types furiously away.
The man is on a mission, a mission to write a film.

Road to Hollywood
Brady is majoring in multimedia communication with a concentration in film studies and is in his third year at Olivet. It doesn’t take long to find out that filmmaking is his passion. Some of his favorite movies are Good Will Hunting, The Dark Knight, and Arrival.
If all goes according to plan, Brady will be heading out to Los Angeles next spring for Olivet’s Film Studies internship program.
When he isn’t watching movies, he’s writing them.
“I like to get the ideas out of my head and on to paper,” Brady said. He spends part of his time writing comedic short films to be performed by his friends. When in a more serious mindset, he focuses his efforts on various feature-length films.
Before graduating, his goal is to have three full film scripts ready to submit to scriptwriting contests. “It’ll be nice to get some professional feedback, plus there’s the off chance one of them could actually get made!”
His biggest inspiration for filmmaking has been Kevin Smith, most notable for his films Clerks and Chasing Amy. Even though most great directors got their starts in independent film, Smith has always been different for Brady.
“He makes me think I can actually achieve the goal of being a successful filmmaker,” he said.
Brady’s personal career goals are to mostly direct dramas, either for film or television.
King of Comedy
Though his scripts tend to the dramatic, his personality revolves around the comedic.
Brady admits he is not the most outgoing person, anyone who gets to know him rarely walks away without a laugh.
“He is legitimately the funniest guy I know,” said Eric Pendleton, Brady’s roommate through all three years at Olivet.
Brady explains that he mostly tries to be funny just to entertain himself.
“When you live in your own head, you find you need new forms of entertainment,” he said.
This jocular side has come out very much in his more informal scriptwriting. He enjoys taking his love of humor into writing short films with the intent of involving his friends and roommates in getting them filmed.
“Most of my material literally just comes from conversations I’ve had with my roommates,” Brady said.
