A Look into Olivet’s Multimedia Communication Department
Entertainment is such a big part of this world today. Through movies, TV shows, podcasts, radio and much more, we are pulled into the world of multimedia communications. The people behind all of this at Olivet Nazarene University are hardworking and passionate students. Every one of these multimedia students wants to tell a story, big or small, through media and that is exactly what they are doing in their classes, practicums, and programs.
Within the multimedia communication major, there are six concentrations students can choose from. These concentrations range from talking live on the radio all the way to helping a live show be produced.
“Olivet wants to take a liberal arts approach,” said Mark Bishop, an associate professor at Olivet Nazarene University. “We want you to be strong in all areas of multimedia, which includes anything from writing, to editing and shooting.”
The professors in the ONU multimedia department want students to be educated in all areas of multimedia so they can go out in the real world and put what they have learned here, to work.
Radio and Record Industry
A lot of the time, when people think about radio, they think about the music, but so much more goes on behind the scenes. Students in the Radio and Record Industry concentration, learn about being an on-air personality and about the production side of it all. Students start with a basic broadcasting class, then move on to audio production. The final class, that only radio concentrations take, is the advanced broadcasting class.
“In the advanced broadcasting class, we literally build our own radio station from scratch which gave me a whole new insight to how the radio industry works.” said Mikayla Browne, a senior concentrating in radio and record industry. Browne started on Spark HD3, a student-run radio station, and moved her way up to be on Shine.fm the Christian radio station located on Olivet’s campus.
“I love working for Shine. It’s given me great opportunities to get out into the community, and also just share the gospel on the radio,” said Browne.
Film and TV/Video
“Graphics and video break up content blocks and can improve learners’ ability to understand and retain the content,” said Emily Wood, in a 2019 article published in the talent development. For the students concentrating in TV/Video and film, they are learning about this and so much more. Olivet students in these concentrations, create short films, documentaries, and other creative projects, as well as get a hands-on experience with cameras, lighting, scriptwriting, sound and editing. Students can be a part of Access ONU, a TV news station on the campus of Olivet.
“I’ve always been a big movie lover, but when I watched movies, I didn’t just watch it because it was a good movie, I watched it because I was very curious on how they made it look the way it did,” said Epsivah Arcia Bernal, a Junior, concentrating in film studies.
Students in the film concentration go to Hollywood their senior semester to get the feel of working in the big city. The semester-long program is a great way for students to get even more hands-on experience and even make connections in the film industry.
In addition to film studies, TV/video and radio, other concentrations in the multimedia communication major include multimedia journalism, live event media management, and ministry media. Read more about these concentrations on ONU’s academic page.
