Peer Profile: Destiney-Zoe Jones

In the heart of Bourbonnais, Illinois at Olivet Nazarene University Destiny-Zoe Jones steps into the role of Resident Assistant (RA) in McClain Hall, one of the upper-class women’s dorms, embodying the spirit of her Christian university. Her journey unfolds not just as a rule enforcer but as a guide and mentor, creating a spiritual haven for the women she serves.

Jones offers a firsthand account of her role, saying, “Basically, what the job entails is enriching student development and making a dorm a homely place for our residents. We aim to build our residents spiritually while keeping in the busyness of school.”

Her words echo the commitment to creating a space where academic pursuits and spiritual well-being coexist harmoniously. 

McClain Hall, one of the two upperclassmen dorms for women at Olivet Nazarene University (the other being Howe Hall), becomes a canvas for Destiny-Zoe’s dedication. 

Nighttime “sitting desk” and occasional night-time room checks are the times when Jones ensures residents are in before curfew, often becoming moments of bonding and connection. It is during these times that her role transcends mere enforcement, evolving into an opportunity to personally invest in the lives of each resident. She never passes on the opportunity to catch one of her residents and have a nice chat with them, if not have try to plan to have lunch or coffee with them.

Jones’ impact extends to many of McClain’s residents, such as Monay Bradford. Bradford is often found spending time with Jones in the study room doing homework on the third floor of McClain.  

“Having Destiny-Zoe as my RA has been a blessing,” she said. “She not only ensures the dorm is a safe and nurturing environment but also takes the time to connect with each of us individually. Her genuine care is undeniable- making McClain Hall a true home away from home.”

At the helm of McClain Hall is Joey McMullen, the Resident Director (RD) overseeing the dormitory. Under McMullen’s guidance, Jones and her RA team meet regularly, pouring into each other and undergoing consistent training to enhance their skills as Resident Assistants, emphasizing both professional and personal growth. The collaborative effort is a testament to the supportive environment that characterizes Olivet Nazarene University, emphasizing both professional and personal growth.

Trinity Goode, a fellow RA, praises Jones, saying, “Her dedication brings warmth to McClain Hall, making it feel like a true home.” 

“Being an RA is a job you’re called to,” Jones said, acknowledging the multifaceted nature of her responsibilities. Juggling classes, involvement in her social life with friends, family and also having various jobs within the math department and the Center for Academic Excellence, Jones exemplifies the delicate balance required of an RA. Yet, amidst the busyness, she attests that this is one of the most fulfilling jobs she has ever had.

“I love pouring into my residents and being there for them through the good and bad. I also love the group of women that I have been blessed with on my RA team,” Jones said, encapsulating the essence of her mission—to be a beacon of faith, support, and guidance in the lives of her peers.
