Owen Smith: A Podcast Experience

A new podcast, perchance?

Whether the discussion leads to foods, sports, or the rambling of crazy by college guys, the Perchance podcast exists to entertain young adults about the crazy events and mishaps from the perspective of Olivet Nazarene University students.

Owen Smith, a freshman majoring in Multimedia Communication with a concentration in Radio and Audio Production at Olivet is heavily involved in the production of this new and upcoming podcast, the Perchance podcast.

Statista data

Smith is joined by Elliott Storey, Matthew Clutter, and Grant Wallner, who discuss their topics in a panel-style environment where laughter is shared, jokes are created, and odd comments are made.

“We call ourselves the four horsemen of yap,” Smith said, “We just laugh and chat about whatever and we have fun.”

Smith’s role is mostly as the producer and manager of the show. He acts as the one to schedule the recording times, and also the one who takes the audio file and uploads it to the web to ensure the episode gets released.

To create a podcast…

The way that Smith started working on the podcast was pretty simple, a new hobby emerged.

“My friend Grant suggested we should start a podcast,” Smith said, “and so we did.”

Smith said that the skills that he is learning in his degree at Olivet are helping him with his experiences on the podcast.

“I learned some media stuff in general,” Smith said, “It made uploading and graphic design easier… and it helped me get a general idea of how to be on a microphone.”

Smith hopes that in the future, he can become a sports broadcaster, so the time spent behind the microphone and learning about the production process has been a vital experience for him. He also enjoys being able to have a good time producing a silly piece of media with his friends that they can have fun on and share with others.

What is the Production Process?

Smooth and relaxed are the adjectives that best describe the production for Smith and the Perchance crew. The tools used to record all four guys are simply a condenser microphone, hooked up to a preamp that is then fed into an audio recording program. Smith takes the recording, and publishes it on Spotify for Podcasters to distribute each episode.
