Caleb’s Background

Dressed in his flat cap, dress shirt, and dress shoes, Caleb Torgerson sits in the first row of College Church as he talks about his background. Torgerson is a freshman here at Olivet Nazarene University, majoring in Multimedia Communication with a concentration in TV/Video production. Torgerson initially heard about Olivet through a scholarship. He was unaware Olivet was even a school until he learned about the scholarship. Wanting to attend a Nazarene school along with the full ride he would be getting, he decided to attend.

The reason he wanted to go to a Nazarene school has to do with his upbringing. Growing up, he was brought up Nazarene, which influenced his decision on the kind of university he would attend. Originally, Torgerson did not want to attend college but decided to give it a chance. Once Togerson decided he wanted to go to school, he knew he wanted to be in a Christian environment going into his adulthood. Even though he is only a freshman, Torgerson has some memories that he is fond of already.

“I work in media services and that’s been very enjoyable, that’s one of my favorite things that I do here,” he said.

Favorite Memories

Working in media services has been a great experience for him, along with the people that he works with. He has also found chapel to be very enjoyable even though he says students generally are not too fond of it.

“A lot of people don’t really like it because it’s required, I enjoy going to chapel, I think it’s fun.” he said.”

The variety show was something he was not expecting and caught him by surprise. He thought it was very good, taking pleasure in each performance by the freshman, sophomores, juniors, and seniors. So far in his freshman year, he has met a bunch of people which has been a great experience for him.

Torgerson hopes to pursue video editing for film after he graduates. Whether it be camera crew work for a movie/tv show, director of photography, and/or music. He also talked about the hope of doing YouTube videos in the future.

“Video editing or camera work on film or people’s YouTube videos, maybe if that’s possible,” he said.

Torgerson said that he did not have a specific dream job, just as long as he could be involved in some form of video editing, he would be happy with it. He feels that integrity and being hardworking will be able to land him wherever his heart desires.

Being able to create/visualize a story is why Torgerson loves video editing. He likes to take film and edit it to tell a story that an audience will be able to immerse themselves into. He wants to make something so captivating that the audience will not turn away and want more. Having this imagery and storytelling motivates him to want to make these pieces of art. Since he is story-driven, he has a list of some films that he strongly likes because of the visuals and the way the story moves.

Top Films

His list is Dune 2, A Real Pain, How To Train Your Dragon 1 and 2, and Spiderman Across the Spider Verse. He says that he watches Spider-Man Across the Spider Verse fairly often and is not too fond of How To Train Your Dragon 3. Torgerson also said that Christopher Nolan was his all-time favorite director because of the way he is able to tell a story.
