“I started running cameras and stuff for my church and everything, and then started really liking that and then began working more with other aspects of media”, Tyler Chapin said as he details how he started to get into media.

Chapin is a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University, majoring in Multimedia Communication, with a concentration in Live Event Media Management. Chapin is from the Michigan area and grew into the media world by operating cameras, lighting, and sound. The more he got into it, the more he fell in love with it and wanted to continue. With this love, it was only right that he would join the Media Services team once he got to Olivet Nazarene University.

Routine

On a typical day, after Chapin is done with class, and goes to a meeting with the media services team to figure out what jobs they will be doing for the next couple of weeks. After that, his day is pretty open to get other things he needs to take care of.

His jobs vary depending on events happening on campus.

“Some days it’ll be really busy weeks, like the musical that just happened, I set up the lights and stuff for all that,” Chapin said. “When I wasn’t in class or I wasn’t doing homework, I was in Kresge doing lights from five to eleven o’clock at night every day of the week”.

Chapin talks about his day-to-day routine when working with media services, recorded April 1, 2025.

Working in media services has made quite an impression and impact on Chapin since he started. His interest in production and media services on campus has grown. Even though he has only worked for media services for just a year, he has learned a lot.

“I feel I have learned a lot, not just with media, but working with other people because it’s a team effort with everything you do”, Chapin said. With this interest in media continuously growing, Chapin wishes to pursue a media career after college. He has a strong interest in being a tech director at a church once he graduates.

“A lot of people I’m close to that graduated from Olivet and worked in media here did the same thing,” he said. Seeing that and being in a Christian environment is something that he appreciates.

Great Lighting

His favorite thing by far in media is working with lighting. He finds it very cool and fun.

“The technology aspect of it is cool. It’s just fun, all the creativity and stuff that goes into it, looking at different things like, what color works with this? What two colors go together and things like that,” Chapin said.
