Professionally gathering information for a press release requires skill and practice to do it effectively. One must be a good listener and interviewer among other qualities. However, college students can also learn how to professionally gather information. Writing for press releases requires research, interviewing, and writing. Understanding how to exactly gather needed information will strengthen you as a writer.
Different Kinds of Research
To start off, you need to first gather background information on your story. There are different kinds of research you can do before connecting with a source. One is market and data research which is looking at statistics or sales numbers to validate the significance of a story. Another is contextual/background research which is looking at the company’s background to look at details such as names and dates. Finally, another kind of research is media and audience research which identifies target journalists and publications to ensure the press release reaches the right audience. These are just a few out of many!
Effective and Efficient Interview
How do you conduct an effective and efficient interview with any kind of source? Preparing questions allows for you to rely on an outline in order to stay on track. It’s also good to listen to key details and write down anything of interest that could be of use later. Also it’s important to be polite with the person you’re interviewing. If they start to steer off track you can re-direct with a question. Being an effective listener and writer are key!
How to Ask Questions Over Email
Finally, the last aspect we’ll be looking at is how to ask questions to the source over email. Start by stating the topic, why the source in particular was chosen and provide clear questions to avoid complex language. Asking 3-5 questions max when talking over email.
