My Public Relations Writing Class
This semester, I had the opportunity to take a Public Relations (PR) Writing Class. In this class I learned how to write in AP style, how to write elements of a press kit, and much more. As a multimedia journalism major with a minor in professional writing, this class gave me skills that I’ll be able to use in any future career.
Over the course of the semester, I learned how to write in AP style. Coming into this class, I only knew APA and MLA style. We used a textbook that described what AP style writing was and did multiple practice assignments with it. Through this I was able to learn and understand what AP writing is. I also learned how to write elements of a press kit, including press releases, fact sheets, media advisories, backgrounders, social media content calendars and email pitches! All of this will strengthen my skills as a professional writer. If I go into the PR field I will be able to know how to write press kits in the correct AP format which will make me more attractive to potential employers.
Social media, networking websites and the evolution of my professional writing will further my work as as PR professional in many ways. I’ve learned how social media can be used in the PR field through crisis communication and brand awareness. Networking websites such as Linked In will enable me to connect with people who are in fields that I’m interested in. This could lead me to develop connections that I never thought I would be able to. Through my PR writing class I’ve evolved as a professional writer, I know how to use PR in my writing and will use that to help other companies. The world of PR is big meaning it’ll be used in multiple areas that are not just purely PR. I have a wide range of skills that can be used anywhere
All in all, this class has been very beneficial to me and these skills will help me in my career and as a writer.
