Sunny. Temperature is between 60-75 degrees. No homework. No class. This is Jack Neal’s, Olivet senior, description of a perfect day. Passionate about the outdoors and wildlife, Neal decided to major in multimedia communication with a minor in zoology. His goal is to be a game wildlife DNR or fish and wildlife manager.
Neal is from a small town with a population of 900 people, Castville, Wisconsin. He will actually be a super-senior at Olivet, finishing up in Fall 2021. Jack began his Olivet journey in the communication department switching from major to major. Over the shutdown and quarantine in Spring 2020, Jack realized his passion–a love for animals–could be incorporated into his future career. After conversing with the local Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Neal decided to continue with the multimedia commmunication major and added a minor in zoology.
In life, Neal is motivated by being able to provide for his future family and for the simplistic happiness for which we all strive for. His main hobby is fishing. He says he usually fishes for Bass and sometimes Bluegill with his girlfriend, Rachel. He even found a spot near Olivet where he can go fishing on those perfect days.
If not outside, Neal enjoys watching The Office, Marvel and comedies in general. He also talked about his binge watching and DVD collection of Everyone Loves Raymond TV series. His favorite quote is “Life is short, stunt it,” from the 2007 Hot Rod film.
On a typical day, Neal has class, works at the Rec Center and works as an resident assistant. Although having worked in the food industry, Neal says his favorite job was being an RA for Chapman his sophomore year. He was able to connect and build close relationships with the guys on his floor and his co-RA.
Neal is a well-rounded and rational guy. According to his girlfriend Rachel, Neal overthinks where they should eat but when it comes to studying for a test, he doesn’t think at all. When asked, if your house burnt down, all your family and pets are safe, what would be one thing you save. After thinking for a while, Neal says he would save the Birthday card his girlfriend hand made for him.
Along with having aspirations to work with wildlife in his career, Neal has traveling on his bucket list. Two items include visiting all the state parks in the nation and traveling to New Zealand.
The best advice that Neal has been and which he thinks of often is, “Focus on today and let tomorrow worry about itself.” This has reminded him to focus on the day ahead, not overthinking and enjoying the moment.
