Cami Yanez
Jumping from Santiago to Kansas City, Chicago to Green Bay, and Milwaukee to Omaha, Yanez is no stranger to traveling and getting out of her comfort zone. This progression of living situations is the reason Yanez states, “…it’s hard to have a definite answer when people ask where I’m from.”
When choosing a school, Olivet Nazarene wasn’t her first choice. The school of her dreams was Chicago College of Performing Arts at Roosevelt University. But after visiting the campus of Olivet, she quickly fell in love with the teachers and atmosphere and felt like God was calling her here. She believes Olivet is where God wants her to be.
Yanez explains what she is involved in on campus. Her freshman and sophomore year she was heavily involved with theater. Now, in her junior year, she has moved to being the main costume designer for an upcoming, on-campus production, and she plans on being more involved with the theater department in the future. Aside from theater, Yanez is also involved with Shine.FM. She works on the connections team and loves whats she does every day. With theater as her main passion, Yanez wanted to expand her horizons by working at Shine, and she’s benefitted so much from it.
Working at Shine has been very good for her because it plays into one of her biggest passions: helping people. Yanez talked about her passion for helping others and how it came to be. She explained that growing up, both of her parents were pastors and she was exposed to what it is like to be selfless and give of yourself, even if you don’t have much. Seeing this passion in her parents made her want to do the same.
Another passion of hers is media arts. Yanez has always loved film, especially Disney films. Disney has impacted her in ways that have shaped her for the better. Disney has always been an escape for her and it motivates her to be a filmmaker in the future.
Fellow student Mollie Peery agrees with her passion for Disney. When asked about Yanez, Peery also added that she “doesn’t give up on things she is passionate about.” Yanez was a good friend to her freshman year and is very thankful to be friends with her.
Because of her variety of passions and interests, she shares hobbies with many other people too. From fashion to coffee, theater to Marvel, books and music, traveling and exploring.
She loves to share traveling experiences with other people and giving recommendations to her friends and family. She attributes her ability to travel so much because of her parents’ love for traveling. She loves this about herself because she believes it has led to her having diverse friends, diverse interests, and is accepting of many cultures.
