Paying your way through college can be difficult. A good way to make money to stay on top of the payments is to get a job, thanks to the work-study program. And by getting an on-campus job, you can make it an easier experience.
According to edvisors.com, getting an on-campus job has a number of advantages, including possible assistance with your tuition and little-to-no commute. This is especially handy with gas prices as high as they are right now. By not having to drive to work, you save money on fueling your vehicle.
Getting an on-campus job is also a good way to stay connected to other students and can help teach you how to balance and manage your time. According to an article on usnews.com, “Those who balance work and school may also go on to have higher earnings because they have a larger, more developed resume and a stronger social network.” On top of earning a little extra cash, getting a job during college can increase your chances at being hired for better jobs in the future.

One student who works on campus and enjoys not having to commute is Mikala Turner, a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene, who works with the Media Services team on campus. With this job, she often finds herself working in the chapel, auditorium, gym, and other buildings within walking distance.
“It’s always less than a 5-minute walk away” she said. “I like that it’s convenient and right there.”
This sentiment is echoed by former teacher’s assistant, Alice Tysse.
“The best part of having an on-campus job was how close it was, like, I didn’t have to drive anywhere for work, I didn’t have to use gas, and I didn’t have to walk.” As a teacher’s assistant, Tysse found it easy to balance her job and schoolwork. She also recommends being a TA for a class you are taking if possible, because it will help make the grading process go faster.
There are other jobs on campus besides Media Services and being a teacher’s assistant though. If you’re interested in getting a job on campus, a good place to go is the Student Employment offices on campus. They will help students find a job that is appropriate for them and for their workload. Another place to find jobs is on Handshake. It offers positions for both on-campus and off-campus jobs, which have their own benefits as well. The benefits of getting an on-campus job are exponential. It will help pay off tuition loans, teach students how to better manage their time, and increase their chances at getting better jobs after graduating, all while keeping them connected with other students. It sets them up for a better future, full of endless possibilities.
