After eight majors along with being a transfer student, Karen Villasenor-Poumia has finally found her footing. Loving so many different things makes it so hard to choose a major. Villasenor-Poumia is majoring in Multimedia Communication with a concentration in Journalism.
With a strong passion for writing, testing the waters with a journalism course in 2022 Villasenor-Poumia said, “I took a journalism course at my community college just to see if I would like it… and I decided this is where I should be.”
Noticing how important each communications class is to developing skills was also important to choosing ONU.
“Talking to professors like Prof Utter we learn about the convergence… as you are able to know everything. Or as Dr McLaughlin says, she knows just enough to be dangerous,” she said.
In her free time, Villasenor-Poumia loves to do all sorts of things.
“My freshman brother also goes to school here… so being able to play football or soccer with him in our free times is always nice,” she said.
Additionally, playing ping-pong at Cru5h or simply hanging out with her roommates is a blast.

A particular hobby that she loves is crocheting. Having her mom teach her when she was 14, she fell in love ever since.
“I mostly do simple things like blankets and scarves… but I also love doing little animal designs as well,” she said. With this, she just loves art in general, describing it as a relaxing and fun passion to have in her day-to-day life.
Here at Olivet, she is also involved in the marketing club. Here, she can make products and pitch them to the class, getting a true experience in that field. Being able to get involved in her first semester as a student here was very important to her, as she sees how important friendship and relationships are on campus.

Villasenor-Poumia’s roommate Kristi Jones has nothing but good things to say about Karen. Jones had never met Villasenor-Poumia before move-in day, instead, they connected over a roommate connecting site called ZeeMee. After a few months of talking they decided that they would love to room together.
When asked what one of her favorite things to do with her roommate, Jones says “Playing ping-pong together was really fun, but honestly just sitting, hanging out & talking with her is always a fun time!”
Jones describes her as “not worrying about what others think. She’s sweet and a good person, and she cares for others and it shows. She is also someone who is very determined.”

Villasenor-Poumia simply loves all things comm. Whether it is writing, editing, photography or art, she can do it all and she loves it.
“I love taking a liking to so many different things because it allows me to have different opportunities in the department and for my future,” she said.
With these skills, Villasenor-Poumia expresses how her dream job is to be an art director for a major magazine or if not that just any major company in general.
