Junior year, everything changed. Quite literally in some cases for David Stewart.
Stewart is a sophomore at Olivet Nazarene University, majoring in Multimedia Communication with a concentration in Film Studies. But his passion for the craft doesn’t end there.
He is involved in many things, both in and out of the classroom. He has a passion for photography and videography that started when he was a kid and has only grown from there. He’s involved in both track and the gospel choir, and still finds time to serve in his church’s AV ministry. He runs his own business and was recently hired as an on-air personality for Spark.HD.
Why Olivet?
David Stewart speaks on how he first heard about Olivet, why he chose it, and what his favorite memory on campus is.
His Passion
From an early age, Stewart has been fascinated with computers. It was a major bonding point with his dad when he was younger, and it helped put him on the path to majoring in Multimedia Communication in college.
His interest in video editing first started in middle school making short films.
“In middle school, my friends all had YouTube channels, and they were like ‘You should create a YouTube Channel too,” Stewart said. “I said ‘OK I’ll try it out.’ And I’ve been making YouTube videos for the past couple of years.”
But once junior year came around, his parents started asking him about college, and that hobby turned into an actual career path.
“I finally decided to do film studies because I was interested in the process of making those videos and recording those videos,” Stewart said.
His Hobbies
David Stewart sits in a busy locker room, a point in the chaos of his teammates getting ready for today’s track meet. Earlier today, he was dressed in purple robes as he sang with the rest of gospel choir on the stage in Centennial Chapel, and tomorrow morning he’ll be helping out in his church’s sound booth.
He got involved with track in high school as his extracurricular of choice, and loved the supportive environment and teammates and the exhilaration of track events. He kept up with it and earned college scholarships because of his impressive record.
“David is a joy to have on the team,” His track coach, Zontavius Johnson, said. “He keeps everyone’s spirits up.”
Stewart can also be found bopping along to music with the rest of the gospel choir. This is his first year in Olivet’s gospel choir, and he’s already loving it.
“I love being around people,” Stewart said. “I love interacting with my peers. I like to bring people’s spirits up.”
Stewart has also gotten involved in his church. He’s a part of the audiovisual ministry that aids in controlling audio for services and events.
“Recently these past couple months I helped my church start live-streaming their services as well,” Stewart said. “So I guess you can say I’m like the video guy there as well.”
His Work
With as much experience as Stewart has, it’s not very surprising that he has such an extensive portfolio. Full of photos and videos, the site doubles as the landing page for his photography/videography business, The Stu Productions.
He started taking photos of the sports teams in his junior year of high school. Over time, he got better and learned what the different settings did until he was confident enough in his work to take on clients.
But that isn’t the only place where you can see his work.
He also works as an on-air personality for Spark.HD, Olivet’s student-run radio station. Tune in to catch him Monday to Friday, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. either by downloading the app or hopping onto their website.
“I’m a very creative person,” David Stewart said. “I feel like I always have been.”
