Trump’s Budget Cuts: A PR Perspective

The United States President, Donald Trump, has proposed multiple budget cuts across numerous departments. Within his budget request of $2.2 trillion, military spending would receive $1.5 trillion.

A full breakdown, including the amounts with which grants or programs have been cut or reduced, can be found here: https://www.newsweek.com/list-of-programs-trump-2027-budget-proposal-would-cut-11780685

The reduced programs fall under many areas. The following departments would be impacted by this new budget:

  • Department of Labor
  • NASA
  • Department of State and International
  • Small Business Administration
  • Environmental Protection Agency
  • Department of Housing and Urban Development
  • Department of Homeland Security
  • Department of Energy
  • Department of Health and Human Services
  • Department of Commerce
  • Department of Education
  • Department of Agriculture

Views on the budget plan differ. Some believe it is necessary to fund the war in Iran and make budget cuts across the board. While others consider this as paying the same in taxes and seeing less of a return. An article by American Progress states, “Within the context of the war in Iran, the budget should be seen as taking money away from Americans and sinking it into war.

One of the departments being cut from is the Small Business Administration. This could greatly affect small companies that rely on those programs.

Another aspect to consider is reliability. Some of these departments will no longer be able to provide the same services to the public. This could heavily skew how a person views the department, especially if they don’t know the reason behind this change. Impacted departments need to be careful about how they announce the shift for any of their programs or services. Departments will need to get the news out quickly about any changes. They need to ensure people know what is still available and what they can no longer provide.

Programs that have been cut completely or massively scaled back will have to get very creative with how they use any allotted money. This could mean layoffs might become common within research fields, NASA or the departments themselves. They will need to make sure internal communication is clear and timely.

The budget plan would impact not only what people can receive and trust in a department, but also the employees who work for them. Overall, all communication about what is reduced will need to be explained by the respective programs to avoid confusion.
