The Upcoming Draft

All men ages 18 to 25 will be automatically registered for the draft pool this upcoming December. This rule has been set into place in the event that a draft was required, which was last in effect going into the Vietnam War.

This year, a new rule has been passed by Congress. Instead of making eligible men manually register, a new system has been established that will automatically register every man in the country. Every male US citizen, as well as green-card holders, refugees, asylum seekers and undocumented men. The only individuals that are exempt are those on nonimmigrant visas.

Historically, the U.S. has drafted soldiers to fight in the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, World War I, World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War, so this is nothing new. The Selective Service System was established in 1917 by President Woodrow Wilson. Currently, in the 46 states that have automatic registration, men have to self-register within 30 days of their 18th birthday.

Looking at this news from both CNN and Fox News, the perspectives seem to be similar. The news source, CNN, tends to be more left-leaning, whereas Fox News tends to be on the opposite side. This news story is more informative, sticking with facts and straying from any opinions.

Throughout this news story, Fox focuses on the history of the registration laws and how that may differ from how things run today. On the other hand, CNN focuses on the actual registration and how this will work moving forward. Fox News is short and to the point with one visual right at the beginning of the article. CNN is slightly longer with a visual and a graph to help the reader better understand.

Although both news sources write articles on the same topics, each source writes content through varied perspectives.
