Holly Honeycutt: Camp’s girl dream come true.

Meet Holly Honeycutt, a junior Multimedia Communication major with a concentration in Ministry Media at Olivet Nazarene University.

Holly grew up in Pekin Illinois and was always looking forward to summer, summer meant, SUMMER CAMP! Holly describes herself as, “a camp girl for sure” and would love going to camp. When at her summer camp she often encounters Olivet’s Ministry Team, which would come and lead worship at a wide variety of summer camps. Holly remarked that these “Super cool college students, would always encourage me to try out, and that the audition process was ‘cut-throat’”. This inspired Holly, as she too is a very talented guitar player and singer, she was fascinated with what Olivet’s ministry teams did.

Mentioned earlier Holly started playing guitar in the fourth grade, over twelve years ago! This passion for music often meant she loved playing and singing as well, although Holly has never taken a singing lesson her singing career really started taking off her freshman year of High school, where she started singing in front of people.

Once Holly got to college her dreams starting really take off! Holly joined City on a Hill, a ministry team at Olivet with a contract that started in May 2018 and ended in April 2020.

When asked what the is the main thing ministry team does, Holly remarks that the majority of what ministry teams does is play at camps during the summer. The region of their travels ranges from Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, and Indiana. This is because of being in Olivet’s district, and if they want to play outside of their district, they have to ask permission from the other Nazarene’s university president.

The farthest journey Holly’s been on was nine hours north, to Wisconsin Teen Camp in the upper part of Wisconsin, “basically Canada in Wisconsin” Holly remarks. Nine hours in a bus with seven other people must have their challenges, but Holly was very lighthearted about it and says the typically routine included, goofing around at the beginning, to then settling down; watching Netflix, sleeping, or listening to music, then shortly before they reach their destination around round of goofiness sparks up again. When they arrive at the location, the band, had to set up and get prepared, Holly remarks that is takes close to an hour, but during that time, the band gets together, hype each other up, and prepare themselves to go on.

Holly’s own personal routine, includes a lot of sleep, faking it til she makes it, and of course, Starbuck’s Frappuccino cold drinks that help keep her on her toes and ready to go. “9/10 times during the service you wake up with pure adrenaline, with all the kids jumping around you feed off that.” According to an interview with Holly.

Holly was not the only member of City on a Hill who wanted to do ministry teams since growing up. Zachary Meyers, a junior multimedia communication major said that he wanted to be in ministry teams because they were at his home church.  Zach first met Holly at the blending session ministry teams holds my freshman year, when we all learned our bands for the next year. Zach says that; “She is someone that I am the closest with in ministry teams and I have been with her my whole time in ministry teams.”

Holly’s position on City on a Hill, is programmer, acoustic guitar, and singer.

City on a Hill’s members include; Zach Meyers technical and sound man; Bryce Marcordes, electric guitar; Timmy Miller, drummer; Brooke Barrick, Vocalist; Tyler Baker, Vocalist; Jacob Levergood, bass guitar; Austin Stafford, Keyboardist.
